On Thursday, the city of Chicago released a video of the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo, as Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the boy’s family together called for people to “express themselves peacefully” following the “incredibly painful” release.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability – Chicago’s police oversight agency investigating the shooting – released the videos two days after Adam’s family was shown the footage and 17 days after the shooting itself, which took place in the early morning hours, March 29.

Body-camera footage of the shooting was made public, along with multiple third-party surveillance videos and other materials related to the investigation, including ShotSpotter recordings and audio of 911 calls.

Chicago Police Officer Killed Innocent Boy

This week’s suspect fatally shot Chicago police in what the department called an “armed confrontation” was identified Thursday as a 13-year-old. Adam Toledo of Chicago died of a gunshot wound to his chest early Monday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Chicago Police said an officer responded to a scene where gunfire had been detected when the officer shot the suspect.

“He was so full of life,” said the boy’s mother, Elizabeth Toledo, whose family surrounded him. “They just took it away from him.”

Toledo said she last saw her son, who was in seventh grade, on Sunday during a gathering to memorialize a relative who died a few years ago. She said he would sneak out at night while she was asleep.

“I want (to) know what happened,” she said regarding how her son died. “I just want justice for my son. That’s all.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot took to Twitter, saying it is crucial video footage of the shooting be shown first to the boy’s family and then the public as quickly as possible.

In a statement issued Thursday offering his condolences to the teen’s family, Police Superintendent David Brown, whose department has struggled to regain public trust in many Chicago neighborhoods, said the department was “adamantly” calling for the release of the body camera video.

Police Report

Police said officers had been dispatched to the Little Village neighborhood on the city’s West Side shortly after 2 a.m. after what is called ShotSpotter technology detected the sound of gunfire in the area.

“Officers observed two subjects in a nearby alley, one subject fled on foot”, and the officers began chasing him, department spokesman Tom Ahern said.

The officers chased the person into an alley behind Farragut Career Academy High School, where one officer shot him in the chest. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said. Also, Howard Ludwig, a spokesman for the police department, said investigators are still trying to determine if the teen fired a gun at the officers before being fatally shot.

Police said the other person who ran from police officers, Ruben Roman Jr. of Chicago, was arrested on a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the shooting. The officer or officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative duty for 30 days, both of which are routine in police shootings.

In a statement issued Thursday afternoon, COPA confirmed the details provided by the police department. A police body camera captured the shooting. Still, that COPA is prohibited by law from releasing the video “absent the issuance of a court order” because the teen who was shot was a minor.
