Antonio Demetrice Rhynes is the suspect of well-known actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd. He is accused of shooting and killing Thomas Jefferson Byrd earlier this month in southwest Atlanta.
He was killed on Oct. 3 off of Belvedere Avenue in southwest Atlanta. Police said Byrd was shot in the back multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.
He is 30-years-old as of 2020.
Thomas Jefferson Byrd Murder
Atlanta Police said Friday morning that an arrest has been made in the shooting death of actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd.
According to Officer Steve Avery, homicide detectives, following up on evidence and tips from citizens, were able to identify a suspect in the shooting. Avery said warrants were issued on Wed., Oct. 14, for 30-year-old Antonio Demetrice Rhynes, for felony murder.
Byrd was born in Griffin, Georgia, and was a resident of southwest Atlanta, according to his obituary. He received a bachelor’s degree from Morris Brown College and a master’s degree from the California Institute of the Arts.
Byrd was known for his roles in many Spike Lee films and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2003 for his performance in the Broadway revival of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Rhynes was arrested early Friday morning at the Royal Oaks Apartments in the 3500 block of North Camp Creek Parkway, Avery said. Once processed, Rhynes will be taken to the Fulton County Jail.

The 30-year-old is being booked into the Fulton County Jail. He is facing felony murder charges. Friends say Byrd was not just an actor, he was an activist trying to make this world a better place.
Juliette McCann grew up with Byrd in Griffin. They went to high school together and kept in contact. Byrd recently sent McCann a text with a message for her children.
