Biography

Mike Williamson was born in 1932 and died on 2 May 2019. He was a professional runner. when Mike banned from foot-running He turned his efforts acting as a sports commentator of Australian rules football matches.

in1966 Grand Final where St Kilda won their first premiership as well as the 1970 VFL Grand Final where Williamson called the now immortal “Jesaulenko, you beauty!”, one of the most famous quotes in the history of Australian rules.

numerous advertising campaigns, including one for Carlton Draught, as well as a 2006 Toyota Memorable Moments campaign featuring Alex Jesaulenko himself. He presented the premiership medallions to Essendon in 1993.

As well as commentating, Williamson was involved with general announcing duties at both 3AK and 3AW.  3AW Staff gave him the nickname “Scoop”, a reference to his midday program “Radio Roundsman”, featuring interviews with people making news around Melbourne.

He also compared the “TAA Hit Parade”, a 6 pm Sunday program featuring the 8 top tunes of the week. At HSV-7 he compared a number of variety and quiz shows, the most notable being Tell the Truth and The Penthouse Club. He was co-hosted by Mary Hardy who later compared the show with others, including Bill Collins and Ernie Sigley.

Sir Arvi Parbo was born on 10 February 1926 and died on 1st May 2019. He had died at the age of 93. He was born in Tallinn, Estonia.

He migrated to Australia in 1949. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1955.

Sir Arvi Parbo Career

He joined Western Mining Corporation in 1956 and over the next 12 years held the positions of Underground Surveyor Underground Manager Technical Assistant to the Managing Director and Deputy General Superintendent.

Arvi Parbo was appointed General Manager in 1968 and became a Director in 1970. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 1971 and became Managing Director in the same year.

He was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Western Mining Corporation, subsequently renamed WMC Limited in In 1974.

He was awarded to an engineering student from the University of Adelaide for the first time In 1977. He is awarded annually, in partnership with Engineers Australia.

In the New Year Honours of 1978, Arvi Parbo was appointed a Knight Bachelor for his service to the industry.

He relinquished his Managing Director position at WMC and became the company’s Executive Chairman In 1986.  Sir Arvi Parbo retired as an executive but was appointed non-executive Chairman and retired from this position in 1999.

He was Chairman of Alcoa of Australia from 1978 to 1996, Chairman of Munich Reinsurance Company of Australia from 1984 to 1998 and Chairman of Zurich Australian Insurance group from 1985 to 1998.

He was appointed a Director of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP) and was appointed Chairman in 1989 until retirement in 1992.

In June 1993 Arvi Parbo was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia and had his portrait painted by the artist, William Dargie. The work is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.

Sir Arvi was a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE). He was the ATSE’s President from 1995-1997.
