Chrys Carvajal was a National Guard soldier who found shot to death early Saturday in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side. He was 19-years-old.
Family members told NBC 5 Carvajal had been home for less than a month and had plans to return to the National Guard base in Riverside when he was gunned down early Saturday.
Chrys Carvajal and his siblings always would joke that he was their mother’s favorite child when they were kids. As they grew older, his oldest sister realized it was his obedience and drive that his mother admired.
“Chrys was always there. He was always a mommy’s boy, helping out mom, making sure she was OK,” Carvajal’s sister, Jennifer Ramirez, said Sunday.
Ramirez is the oldest of her four siblings, but even she looked to Carvajal as a role model. “We all admired him for his courage and his strength,” she said.
Chrys Carvajal was a National Guard soldier.
The 19 year-old shot to death when he stepped outside of a party on the NW side.
His family is asking anyone with information to come forward.

National Guard Soldier Found Dead
Carvajal joined the National Guard last year after graduating from Chicago Academy. He aspired to become a Chicago police officer when he turned 21.
Chrys Carvajal was found lying on a sidewalk unresponsive with gunshot wounds at approximately 1:23 a.m. Saturday morning in the 2200 block of North Lockwood, police said. Officers were first called to the area after a report of shots fired.
Chrys Carvajal, of Portage Park, will be remembered as someone with a “big loving heart” who was always willing to help others, his sister said.
