Why Daunte Wright shot and killed

According to a press release from the police department, Wright was pulled over by officers in Brooklyn Center just before 2 pm. During the traffic stop, police said Wright began to drive away, and an officer opened fire, striking him. Wright drove several blocks before crashing.

According to management and witnesses, a Minnesota police officer shot dead a driver Sunday in downtown Brooklyn, about 10 miles north of Minneapolis, where police were tried and charged with the murder of George Floyd years ago.

By late Sunday, police in armor and helmets had formed a barricade line around police headquarters at Brooklyn Center as a crowd of protesters gathered. But it was almost 10 pm. Police promised illegally to order people to disperse, and gas and other equipment were released in an attempt to spread.

The scene was primarily non-violent, although, in recent hours, a crowd had gathered near the location of the driver’s death, including some people who jumped into police cars and smashed their windows, according to a video posted on Facebook. People chanted “Black Lives That Matter Here” and “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” outside the police station while officers spilled gasoline to disperse the crowd.

Wright’s family said at the scene that he was the father of a son, Daunte Wright Jr., who will turn 2 in July, Star Tribune reporter Kim Hyatt tweeted.

Wright’s sister said on a YouTube Livestream by independent Minnesota media outlet Unicorn Riot, “He was so goofy. He makes everybody happy. They took my brother away from me. … I’m so hurt; they just took him. … I still can’t believe it. I’m still feeling like I’m going to go home and see him. It hurts.”

Daunte Wright Parents Statement

Wright’s mother, Katie Wright, told reporters, “All he did was have air fresheners in his car, and they told him to get out of the car, and his girlfriend said they shot him. He got back in the car and drove away, and he crashed. And now he’s dead on the ground. … Nobody will tell us anything, Nobody will talk to us. The BCA says that they are investigating it. I asked them to please take my son off the ground.” His family told reporters Daunte Wright was driving to a car wash when he was pulled over.

Katie Wright Wright told reporters she was on the phone with her son before he was shot, according to WCCO. She said he called her and said, “Mom, I’m getting pulled over. … They’re asking about insurance.” Katie Wright told reporters, “Then I heard the police officer come to the window and say ‘put the phone down and get out of the car.’ And Daunte said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘We’ll explain to you when you get out of the car.’ Then I heard the phone get either put on the dashboard or dropped, and I heard scuffling and heard the police officer saying, ‘Daunte, don’t run,’ and then the other officer said, ‘Put the phone down,’ and hung it up. And then, like a minute later, I called, and his girlfriend answered, which was the passenger in the car and said he had been shot, and she put it on the driver’s side, and my son was laying their lifeless.”


In June 2020, Wright paid tribute to his father, Aubrey Wright, writing on Facebook, “Happy Father’s Day to the best dad I could ask for‼️ thanks for raising me.

Another family member wrote on Facebook, “Why? You were only 20!!! You were such a great cousin. You didn’t deserve this at all. I pray that we get justice for what the POLICE did to you.”
