Dr Herbert Kleber Bio

Dr Herbert Kleber was born in 1934, who was an American psychiatrist and substance abuse researcher. He based the drug dependence unit at yale university, where he turned into a professor of psychiatry.

He headed the group till 1989. He then served for two and a half years as the deputy director for the call for a reduction on the office of countrywide drug control policy inside the white house.

Herbert Kleber was born on 19 June 1934  and died on 5 October 2018 at the age of 84.

Dr Kleber was an author or co-author of more than 250 papers, and the co-Editor of the American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment, now in its fourth edition.

He received numerous prestigious awards and two honorary degrees. In 2014 it was reported that he serves as a paid consultant to the opioid pharmaceutical industry.

Google remembers the incredible work of pioneering addiction psychologist, Dr Herbert David Kleber with a Doodle on what would have been the 23rd anniversary of his election to the National Academy of Medicine.

The Doodle was illustrated by Massachusetts-based artist and author of the graphic memoir Hey, Kiddo Jarrett J. Krosoczka.

Herbert Klebe was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on 19 June 1934. At the prompting of his father, who had one time aspired to be a doctor himself.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he studied pre-med and discovered his passion for psychology.

Dr Herbert Klebe was assigned to the Public Health Service Prison Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, after completing his psychiatric residency at Yale University, that Dr Kleber’s life’s mission began.

Unlike many doctors of his time, Dr Kleber viewed addiction not as a moral failure, but as a condition that could only be treated through research, medication, and therapy.

While treating inmates for addiction in Kentucky that Dr Kleber realised a new, scientifically-backed approach was needed to successfully manage the condition as the current method saw a majority of patients relapse shortly after release.

Dr Kleber eventually came up with a method he called “evidence-based treatment”, which relied on research and science to change the path of addiction.

In 1996, Dr Kleber was elected to be a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science.

Dr Herber Klebe first marriage was to his high school sweetheart, Joan Fox, and the two had three children. The marriage ended in divorce.

Dr Herber Klebe second wife who died in 2001 was Marian Fischman, a prominent addiction research scientist. Together they co-founded the Substance Abuse Division, one of the leading centres in the country, within the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University.

It became one of the largest and most successful research programs of its kind in the country. At his death, he was a professor of psychiatry there and retired director of the division.

His last marriage was to Ms Lawver, whom he married in 2004.

Herbert Kleber Death Cause

Dr Herber Klebe died on October 5th, 2018 while vacationing in Greece with his wife, Anne Burlock Lawver, his son, Marc, and his daughter-in-law, Judith.

Marc Kleber confirmed the death and said his father, who lived in Manhattan, died of a heart attack on the island of Santorini per the New York Post. He was 84.
