However, Hoffman received a call from the team’s coach an hour later, informing him that his son had fainted just minutes into practice.

He was transported to Nebraska Medical Center, where physicians attempted to resuscitate him for several hours. Hoffman added, “The doctor came and said, ‘It is not looking good, he is extremely overheated,’”

Cause of Death

Doctors told Hoffman that Geiger died of heatstroke.

According to the World Herald, the temperature in Omaha at 4 p.m. Tuesday was 91 degrees. Still, the heat index was between 100 and 106 degrees, causing the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory.

Hoffman said, “He didn’t deserve this,”

“He had his whole life ahead of him. I just wish this didn’t happen.”

Geiger, who was supposed to acquire his driver’s license on Wednesday, had an internal body temperature of roughly 122 degrees, according to medical officials, according to Hoffman.

In a statement issued to parents on WednesdayOmaha South High School announced Geiger’s death.

Principal Jodi Pesek wrote, “We have been in contact with Drake’s family and conveyed our heartfelt sympathy and support,”
