What is Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation, commonly known as KyoAni, was founded by Yoko and Hideaki Hatta in 1981 in the Kyoto prefectural city of Uji, just outside the city of Kyoto itself.
It’s best known for series like K-On! and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and released standalone feature A Silent Voice in 2016 to widespread acclaim.
Netflix picked up the streaming rights to KyoAni’s Violet Evergarden series and made it available worldwide last year.
Suspected Arson At Anime Studio In Japan
A major anime studio in Kyoto, Japan, was engulfed in flames in a suspected act of arson that killed at least 33 people, according to Japanese national broadcaster NHK.
The CEO of Kyoto Animation, Hideaki Hatta, told NHK that the studio had received threatening emails: They were addressed to our office and sales department and told us to ‘die.

Police said the victims of the Kyoto Animation Co. building fire included 12 men, 20 women and another individual whose gender was unknown.
A Kyoto prefectural police spokesperson said a 41-year-old man suspected of carrying out the attack also had a backpack containing several knives. The suspect poured what appeared to be gasoline around the studio and set it on fire.
According to a witness that spoke with the police, the suspect shouted “Die!” when spilling the liquid at the building’s ground floor.
The suspect is currently in hospital with serious burn injuries and police do not expect to be able to question him on Thursday.
