According to nypost.com, Jenn Bethune said, “We came across a white van that had Florida plates,”
“A small white van. We would stop and say hi because we’re from Florida too, but the van was completely dark. There was nobody there, so we decided to continue on our way.”
The van appeared to be “abandoned,” according to the couple, who are chronicling their family’s cross-country journey.
The Bethunes claimed they first noticed the van parked off to the side around six or 6:30 p.m. and then saw it again when they returned to the road. Kyle Bethune said, “It’s kind of freaky for a late Saturday evening,”
The video posted by the Bethunes is only one of several sightings recorded to officials, who have pleaded for the public’s help in locating Petito.
Petito, 22, went missing last month while on a cross-country trip with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, who also vanished after returning to their Florida home. On August 25, she last spoke with her via FaceTime.
Petito’s family and the FBI were both aware of the Bethune video, according to them.
The family posted on the “Find Gabby” Facebook page on Sunday, “We believe this is the van for multiple reasons,”
“Please do not clog up the tip line with the same video. is in the hands of the right people. Thank you so much; this is exactly why we are asking people to review older photos and videos. #FindGabby”
Shannon Baker, who told KST-TV that she and her husband were driving through the Jenny Lake area of Grand Teton on August 25 when they observed the vehicle around 5 p.m., was one of the other sightings. Baker said to KST, “I’m sure of it,”
“It had the black ladder on the back and the two black rooftops on top, the two bars, and we made the comment that would be the perfect little camper to go around in.”
“But we just kind of had a brain fart, ‘Oh, there’s that van.’”
They didn’t realize it was the same vehicle until last week when they saw reports about Petito missing. Baker said, “I said, ‘Oh my god!’ That’s the same van we saw,”
“Without a doubt, on my husband’s life, I know for a fact that was their van.”
Since Petito went missing on September 11 and news of her missing went viral, authorities have been combing through hundreds of tips and exploring wide regions of Wyoming and Utah.
Petito, 22, last spoke to her mother, Nichole Schmidt, on August 25 and then abruptly departed, leaving her daughter, Laundrie, 23, to return to their Florida home alone on September 1.
Meanwhile, Laundrie, who hired a lawyer and refused to speak to authorities, has vanished from the North Port, Florida, home he lived with Petito and his parents last week, prompting yet another major search.
Laundrie’s parents informed police their son went for a trek near their home in the large Carlton Reserve on Tuesday and never returned.
