A native of Chorley, Lancashire, he initially settled in Oxford to study modern and medieval languages. He later moved closer to home to study law at the University of Manchester. In 2012, he earned a first-class degree after sitting for his law exams while filming Back Off. That same year he won the third series of The Great British Back Off. After graduating from college, he worked as a banker in the asset finance department of the Royal Bank of Scotland. White turned down a career in law and decided to focus on cooking and pursued a career in cooking at Le Cordon Blue, London. In January 2016, John White’s Kitchen Cookery School opened. The school opened in a 400-year-old cattle shed on his family farm at Tunley Lane in Rittington, Lancashire.
White wrote and published four cookbooks. His first book, John Whitebacks, was released on April 25, 2013. The second John Whitebacks at Home was released on March 27, 2014. His third book, Perfect Plates in 5 Ingredients, was published in April 2016, and his fourth book, Peace: Food to Calm the Soul, was published in October 2017.
