Lionel Messi – Club Career

Lionel Messi is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for Spanish club Barcelona and the Argentine national team. Often considered the best player in the world and rated by many in the sport as the greatest of all time, Messi is the only football player in history to win five FIFA Ballons d’Or, four of which he won consecutively, and the first player to win three European Golden Shoes. With Barcelona he has won eight La Liga titles, four UEFA Champions League titles, six Copas del Rey, three Supercopas de España, two Club World Cups, and has taken home a record-tying five Ballon d’Or awards. He has also spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, establishing himself as a club legend.

Born and raised in central Argentina, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child. At age 13 he relocated to Spain to join Barcelona. After rapidly advancing through Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, he made his competitive debut aged 17 in October 2004. His first years with Barcelona were difficult due to their financial struggles at the time; however he was soon part of a attacking trio with teammates Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho that brought dramatic success to the club. Messi became an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s team during his first season as manager; Guardiola revolutionized Messi’s position on the pitch orienting him as a false nine within his highly tactical 4–3–3 formation that went on to enjoy tremendous success. During his time at Barcelona Messi has broken numerous longstanding records; he became their all-time top scorer at age 24, surpassed Migueli after scoring his fifth Copa del Rey goal at age 25 and became Barça’s youngest captain at age 26 years old when he took over from Carles Puyol who had retired earlier that year; Messi also led them to their first ever FIFA Club World Cup triumph in 2009. Three successful seasons followed this whereupon manager Guardiola left Messi frustrated by frequently deploying him on the wing instead of through the center of attack; this issue came to surface during Pep’s final year in charge whereafter Pep acknowledged that perhaps he made some mistakes while managing Leo. The following season Luis Enrique came in as manager and reverted back to playing Messi through the middle once again where if given space could now more often than not be unplayable; this was evident during Leo’s record-breaking 2012–13 campaign where he set new standards for goals scored in La Liga – 50 – along with becoming Barça’s all-time leading scorer across all competitions 187 goals in total for Barça at age 25 years old – leaving behind previous record holder César Rodríguez who had held it since 1939 – whilst also becoming La Liga‘s top assists provider with 12 assists that same season; it was under Luis Enrique whereupon Leo began accumulating an unprecedented amount of individual awards never before seen most notably setting new benchmarks for both fifa ballon D‘ors 4 – which would go on to be bettered within months by himself for a record 5th time but also becoming la liga ‘s top scorer an incredible 6 out of 7 times between 2009–2016 – only being beaten out by Christiano Ronaldo during 2013/14 & 2014/15 while also tieing telmo zarra ‘s longstanding la liga goalscoring record setting new standards along they way en route icoachbreak any outgoing records previously met by Zarra throughout his exceptional career
