Westroads Mall shooting

The shooting, which took place around noon Saturday, forced the evacuation and eventually the closing of the mall for the day. Late Saturday, police identified the victims as Trequez Swift, 21, and Ja’Keya Veland, 22.

In a news conference Saturday afternoon in the mall’s parking lot, police said a man later identified as Swift suffered gunshot wounds inside the mall. He was treated at CHI Health Bergan Mercy Hospital where he later died.

Veland was taken by private vehicle to CHI Health Immanuel Hospital where she received treatment for an injury that was not life-threatening.

Neil Bonacci with OPD’s information office said that the second victim, a 22-year-old female, was driven in a personal vehicle to CHI Immanuel Hospital, and the afternoon OPD report stated she had walked into the hospital with a gunshot wound and said she had been shot at Westroads. She had a minor leg injury that was not considered life-threatening, police said.

Much of the mall parking lot was cleared out by 1:35 p.m., with many emergency vehicles clearing out by 2:22 p.m. when the OPD forensics team arrived at the scene.
