Matt James Wiki – Biography
Matt James was named ABC’s first black “Bachelor” in the reality show’s 18-year run, but Bachelor Nation may already be familiar with the history-making leading man.
James was first introduced to fans of the franchise as Tyler Cameron’s best friend. Cameron, who appeared on Hannah Brown’s season of “The Bachelorette,” shot to stardom after his stint on the show, and his BFF became a familiar face people saw on Cameron’s Instagram account.
He is 28 years old.
James, a Raleigh, North Carolina, native, attended Wake Forest University from 2010 to 2014.
James graduated with a degree in economics and landed jobs at top companies like Merrill Lynch, Verger Capital Management LLC, and Davenport & Co. LLC. However, during a stint at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, he frequented Manhattan and fell in love with the Big Apple.
James left his job to work as a researcher for CBRE, a commercial real estate company. According to the company’s website, he “provides brokerage and transaction management services to a wide range of companies” and “has a deep knowledge of the real estate industry not only in NYC but across the United States.” It’s unclear if he’s still employed by CBRE.
While at CBRE, James took paying tourists on food tours throughout New York, which led him to launch his own charity, ABC Food Tours, for underprivileged children.
The 6-foot-5 athlete played as a wide receiver on the school’s football team, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. During his time on the team, he met Cameron, who played quarterback in 2012 and 2013.
According to a school magazine profile, James was called to play for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints but was eventually cut from both teams.
First Black Bachelor
ABC made the announcement Friday morning, saying it’s “privileged to have Matt” as the first black Bachelor. Saying it’s been a long time coming is an understatement … it hadn’t happened in 40 seasons of the franchise.
Rachel Lindsay was the first black female lead on season 13 of “The Bachelorette” … way back in 2017. It’s undeniable Matt finally got the nod due to the whole country becoming laser-focused on equality and increasing diversity.
In fact, ABC said, “We know we have a responsibility to make sure the love stories we’re seeing onscreen are representative of the world we live in, and we are proudly in service to our audience. This is just the beginning, and we will continue to take action with regard to diversity issues on this franchise. We feel privileged to have Matt as our first Black Bachelor and we cannot wait to embark on this journey with him.”
