Nikima Thompson Wiki – Biography

Nikima Thompson was a communications operator in Broward Sheriff’s Office. She has died Monday after contracting COVID-19. She worked at the North Communications Center in Coconut Creek. Nikima is believed to be the first police dispatcher/communications specialist to loser her life in the line of duty in the state.

Nikima has died at the age of 41 years.

Earlier Life & Career

Nikima was born in Miami and graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 1996. She joined BSO in 2003 as a communications operator. She worked for BSO for more than 16 years.

Husband, Children

She was 41 and leaves behind four children, ages 22, 21, 16, and 14.

Nikima Thompson COVID-19

March 22 was the last day she worked within the communications center, and on April 2 it was confirmed she had COVID-19. She fought for a month before her family had to make the difficult decision of removing her from her ventilator Monday night. Tony said her organs were failing. Thompson’s mother is currently fighting COVID-19.

Death Cause (COVID-19)

She died Monday after fighting the novel coronavirus for more than a month, the agency announced.

Thompson is survived by her mother, Geraldine Wilson, sister Gina Stewart, and her four children: Aran, 22; Isaiah, 21; Justin, 16; and Heaven, 14.

“We have suffered another loss,” Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said during a news conference Tuesday morning. “This agency is suffering along with this community, but we still continue to serve.”

Thompson, a 16-year veteran at the agency, is the first known dispatcher to die from the virus in Florida, Tony said. She was on a ventilator, but her family made the decision to remove the breathing machine Monday night when her organs began to fail.

“Although we are shaken, we are not broken,” Tony said. “Thank you and keep us all in your prayers.”
