Sandy Calkin was a native of Wellington who was missing since July 10. Police have found the body of missing Wellington man Calkin.
A statement issued by police said the national dive squad had found what they believed to be Calkin’s body near Queens Wharf on Wellington’s waterfront at 10 am on Saturday.
He was 30 years old.
Sandy Calkin Disappearance
Calkin was last seen by his friends on Courtenay Place in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, July 10, and shortly afterward was captured on CCTV walking along the Wellington waterfront.
In a statement on Friday evening, police said CCTV footage showed Calkin walking in a northerly direction on Queens Wharf near Shed 6 a short time later.
He was wearing a maroon hoodie, blue jeans, a black beanie, and a backpack.
The body has been found on Wellington’s waterfront by the Police National Dive Squad this morning.
Wellington District Police believe the body to be 30-year-old Sandy Calkin, although formal identification is yet to occur.
Police said he was located in the water near Queens Wharf at 10 am on Saturday.
A statement made on behalf of the Calkin family said they had prayed for Sandy to be found safe and struggled to come to terms with the news.
“We are devastated by this outcome, we had hoped and prayed that Sandy would be found safe and well,” the Calkin family said.
“We are, however, thankful that he has been found and will be returned to us.
“We loved Sandy dearly and his passing has left a massive hole in our lives.”
They thanked Wellington Police for working hard to find Sandy, and especially the Police Dive Squad, who found Sandy in miserable conditions this morning.
Earlier this week, police appealed for sightings of Calkin, who was first reported missing last weekend.
He was last seen by friends on Courtenay Pl about 1 am on Saturday 10 July, and
CCTV footage showed him walking in a northerly direction on Queens Wharf near Shed 6 shortly later.
“We are especially thankful to the Police Dive Squad who found Sandy in miserable conditions this morning,” the Calkin family said.
“We ask that the media respect our privacy at this time while we grieve and process this tragedy.”
Police said they were making inquiries into Calkin’s death on behalf of the coroner, and the findings would be released when available.
They shared their condolences with Calkin’s family and thanked the public for their assistance in the search.
“Police share our condolences with Sandy’s family at this incredibly sad time,” the statement said.
