“Nepalese climbers have finally reached the summit in K2. They have climbed the ‘wild mountain’ at the most dangerous time: winter,” the company added.
K2, an almost perfect pyramid and the second-highest mountain in the world, was the only one of the 14 peaks over eight thousand meters high that has not been climbed in winter to date.
The ten climbers who took part in the climb were Nirmal Purja, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzing Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Pem Chiri Sherpa, Dawa Tempba Sherpa, Mingma G, Dawa Tenjin Sherpa, Kili Pemba Sherpa, and Sona Sherpa.
The climbers embarked on their final ascent on Friday night, and after climbing for hours, managed to reach the summit on Saturday, around 17:00 local time (12:00 GMT). There was no news of the climbers in the last hours, and they were afraid of the worst. On the contrary, as the Seven Summits Treks have advanced, all the climbers have reached the top together, those who were ahead have been waiting for the others.
About 60 climbers have gathered this winter to try to achieve a great feat in the main camp of K2. So far, only 367 climbers have climbed to the second-highest peak in the world. The first was the Italian Achille Compagnoni in 1954.
Aitzitk, K2 has also left unfortunate news; in fact, the Catalan mountaineer Sergi Mingote, who was taking part in the same expedition that reached the summit, has died there.
Mingot had an accident while descending to the main camp, Karrar Haidri, a spokesman for the Mountaineering Club of Pakistan, told EFE.
The mountaineer from Parets del Vales had a serious fall as he was descending from the first camp to the main camp. Despite setting up an evacuation device, they were unable to do anything to save his life.
He had elevated the Catalans by eleven miles and led the expedition of the Seven Summit Treks agency in Nepal. However, he failed to make it to the summit and spent the night in Camp 3 with Chilean Juan Pablo Mohr.
