Simona Cavallaro was an Italian student who died after she was attacked by the dogs in the southern Italian town of Satriano.
On Thursday, sources said Friday, she was killed by a pack of dogs in Calabria’s forest picnic beauty spot. Simona Cavallaro was attacked and mauled to death by the animals at Monte Fiorino, in the comune of Satriano, not far from Catanzaro.
Calabria Governor Nino Spirlì said Cavallaro had been killed in a “well-equipped” park and her death was hard to understand.
“It’s a huge tragedy that could and should have been averted.” Cavallaro, from Soverato near Catanzaro, had gone on a hike with friends in the area.
The dogs also attacked a person with her but managed to escape by shutting herself in a nearby hut. A shepherd who reportedly owns the dogs has been identified and is being quizzed by prosecutors.
Simona Cavallaro was 20-years-old as of 2021.

Cavallaro and her boyfriend, who has not been named, had just finished a picnic with a group of friends when they decided to go for a stroll through the woods, local news sites Agi reported.
A pack of stray dogs attacked the couple while they were passing through a densely wooded area.
Cavallaro’s boyfriend eventually got away, but she was mauled by the dogs that are reported to have attacked every part of her body.
The boyfriend, who managed to hide from the pack of dogs in an abandoned shack, alerted the local authorities with a phone call.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported the 20-year-old to a local hospital who initially was still alive despite her horrific injuries covering all parts of the body.
But before they could arrive, Cavallaro was torn apart by the dogs, according to local media.
Still alive but horrifically injured, Cavallaro was transported to the hospital, where she died shortly after arriving.
Local authorities are in the process of rounding up the pack of dogs, and an investigation into the student’s death has begun.
