Rangers have announced the death of their well-known former manager Walter Smith. He also took charge of Everton and Scotland, winning 21 trophies during the two spells of charge at Ibroux. This makes him the second most successful Rangers manager after Bill Strath.

Smith dies at 73 Smith won two spells for the Rangers and took over Scotland and Everton.

He died in the same year that the Rangers won their first Scottish Premiership title since Smith took over last season in 2011.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our former manager, chairman, and club legend Walter Smith,” the club said.

Career

Smith was appointed by the Rangers in April 1991 after Graeme Sons, of whom he was an assistant, left for Liverpool. Smith went on to win seven consecutive Rangers titles. At the time, Rangers were one of the most prominent clubs in Europe. Smith began Paul Gascoigne’s career after the midfielder’s spell in Lazio.

Smith left Ibrox in 1998, spending four years at Everton. He rejuvenated the Scottish national team in 2004 before returning to Ibrox three years later. Smith led the Rangers to the 2008 UEFA Cup Final, claiming eight domestic honors before retiring from management in 2011.

Tribute

Douglas Park, chairman of the Rangers, said: “It’s almost impossible for any of us at the Rangers to cover what Walter meant. He embodied everything that a Ranger should be. His role and leadership. She was second to none and will live on for a long time in the memory of everyone she worked with as the first team manager during her two terms.

“I spoke to Walter recently last weekend. He was able to provide advice and help, even when he was struggling with the disease. I am personally grateful for that. I know he continued to talk to senior staff members, including our manager Steven Gerrard. We will all remember Walter very much in the Rangers.
