In a statement shared on Twitter, Malik said he wanted to create “a place where private family matters are not thrown on the world stage so that everyone can rummage and disarm,” adding that the incident “was and should be a private matter. However, various sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Malik was referring to Yolanda in his statement on social media.

The exes share baby Khai, who is now 13 months old. In September, the couple threw a birthday party for her, and various family members honored her with emotional tributes. The couple first sparked romance rumors in November 2015 when they dated at an American Music Awards after-party together. After dodging questions about their romance for several months, Hadid starred in Malik’s PDA-filled music video for his 2016 single “PillowTalk.”

A month later, on The Zach Sang Show, Malik was asked about featuring his girlfriend in the music video. “I like what you’ve done there,” the singer said about the interviewer’s astute line of questions before confirming that she was “pretty cool.”
